Why get a pre-purchase inspection?
On a used boat, the engine side carries the most financial risk. Before you buy, we inspect the engine and lower unit, check service history and hours, and can perform compression and gear-oil checks to reveal hidden problems. It's a small investment that can save you thousands and give you leverage to negotiate.
Mechanical inspection vs. marine survey
They are not the same. A marine survey is a broad condition and valuation report from a marine surveyor, and it is usually what insurers and lenders ask for. Our inspection focuses on the mechanical side: the engine, drivetrain and systems most likely to cost you money after the sale.
Pre-purchase inspection FAQs
Why is a compression test important? It measures how well each cylinder seals, which reflects the condition of the engine's internals. Strong, even readings are a good sign; a low cylinder points to internal wear.
Which engines can you inspect? Our service department works on Mercury outboards and Volvo Penta, so that is the equipment we're set up to evaluate in depth.
When should I schedule it? Before you sign. The best time to ask questions about an engine is while you can still walk away. Call (760) 804-2766 with the listing details.
Do you inspect the trailer too? Yes. The inspection covers the trailer's electrical, accessories, brakes and structure, along with the hull, batteries, accessories, powertrain and propeller.
